Frank Eye Care has been dedicated to the eye health of its patients in Ottawa, KS for over 20 years. Dr. Frank performs surgeries at three different locations throughout the area for your convenience: AdventHealth Ottawa in Ottawa, KS, Anderson County Hospital in Garnett, KS, and Miami County Medical Center in Paola, KS. Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a disease caused by too-high fluid pressure in the eye, damaging the optic nerve and potentially causing blindness. However, blindness can usually be prevented when your eye doctor detects glaucoma early in its progression. At Frank Eye Center, we offer a glaucoma screening to determine how much damage has been done and a treatment course of action to reduce eye pressure and prevent further damage.

Usual course of treatment involves eye drops, which lower eye pressure by creating a balance between fluid production and drainage. When eye drops aren’t enough, laser trabeculoplasty is used to reduce eye pressure. If neither of these solutions work, your doctor will probably recommend glaucoma surgery. Advancements in this field have resulted in quicker recovery time and fewer side effects.

Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration is a disease of the retina in which the center, called the macula, breaks down. There are two types of macular degeneration, “dry” and “wet.” They both cause vision loss, but “wet” is the least common version and causes the most vision loss. Both types can make basic activities such as reading and driving difficult.

Only a small percentage of patients can be treated for Macular Degeneration, which is why it’s important that it be caught early. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends patients over the age of 40 receive a dilated eye exam every two years and patients over 60 have the exam annually.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetes damages blood vessels in the body, which causes blood to leak out into the body’s tissue. When blood gets into the retina, this can cause swelling, hemorrhage and scarring. When the body tries to create new blood vessels to send to the damaged retina, these new blood vessels are even more diseased. This results in retinopathy. It can be treated with a laser at certain stages to block off the leaking blood vessels. It doesn’t cure the disease, but it does slow it down, and it is a quick and easy procedure.

Pediatric Ophthalmology

  • Amblyopia (“lazy” eye)

All children should receive eye examinations from their pediatricians and at school, and if a problem is detected, they should be referred to an ophthalmologist. Children with certain eye problems such as strabismus or amblyopia should be seen by a pediatric ophthalmologist. During a pediatric eye examination, the child’s visual ability will be tested and his or her eyes will be inspected with a light or microscope after the pupils are dilated with eye drop

Dr. Frank performs a variety of surgeries for his patients in three different locations for their convenience.

Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is an outpatient surgery requiring only a mild sedative and local anesthesia, so you will recover quickly. During the surgery, the doctor will make an incision in your cornea to replace the cloudy contents of the lens with clear lens implants that will last a lifetime. Side effects include mild discomfort for a few days, but eye drops will be prescribed to you to minimize this effect. Your vision should be restored after a several days.

Eyelid Plastic Surgery, including Blepharoplasty

As you grow older, your eyelids stretch and the muscles supporting them weaken, which can cause excess fat above and below the eyes. Blepharoplasty surgery corrects droopy eyelids, which can impair vision and make you look older. The surgeon will remove extra skin, muscle and fat on either the upper or lower eyelids, usually in an outpatient procedure.

Eye Alignment (Strabismus) Surgery

When a muscle in your eye is too strong or too weak, it can affect the alignment of your eyes. Strabismus surgery works to either weaken the muscle that is too strong or to strengthen the muscle that is too weak. Occasionally, muscles may have to be repositioned, such as if a patient’s eye has turned inwards.

Laser Eye Surgery

There are several benefits to laser eye surgery. It’s an outpatient procedure with no risk of infection that offers surgeons a great amount of control and precision. Laser surgery can be used to treat:

  • Retinal tears and holes
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Macular degeneration
  • After cataract surgery
  • Glaucoma
